the Apple iPhone

1. Jonathan Ive, Apple's design chief, closely examined leading cell phones and decided to rethink phone design literally from the bottom up. Example: he pointed out to Time magazine that most phones have tiny feet or protrusions on the bottom that detract from a sleek design. The "feet" are meant to raise a phone slightly off a surface so the speaker on the back can be heard. Ive's solution: move the speaker from the back and avoid the need for "feet." A common sense solution, and yet one that has eluded most other phone makers.

2. Studies have shown conflicting data on whether consumers will be willing to plunk down $500 for the iPhone (and that's the cheap 4 gigabyte version... the 8 gigabyte iPhone will be $600). A survey by online firm Compete found that just 1% of those who would typically be interested in a high-end phone would pay the $500 price tag. But ChangeWave performed reported findings that suggested 67% of targeted consumers would not be put off by the price.

3. The iPhone features represent 200 patent filings by Apple, covering everything from the iPhone's file management system to its touch-screen functionality to ability to download and play podcasts.

4. Financial analysts have been overwhelmingly optimistic over the iPhone's prospects for sales in its first year. Goldman Sachs, for instance, predicted 14 million sales worldwide in the first 12 to 18 months.

5. The iPhone follows in the footsteps of not only the Apple iPod, but also the Newton, Apple's failed attempt at a touch-screen PDA. Much of the technology in the iPhone can be traced back to the low-selling Newton MessagePad, which it produced from 1993 to 1998. Its poor sales have been attributed to its size (larger than traditional PDAs) and price (higher-end Newtons cost ran $1000).

If you print a lot, you know just how much Lexmark toner can cost. On the web you will be able to find great prices on HP toner, Ricoh ink, and Xerox Phaser ink as well as printer accessories for any pictures you may want to print off of your iphone.

6. The iPhone's touchscreen will include features not seen on other touchscreen devices to date. Most notable are the wheel-scrolling feature (which simulates a list pasted onto a wheel you spin with your finger -- the wheel will keep spinning after you lift your finger based on how fast you spun) and the "pinching" maneuver, which will expand or shrink objects for viewing when you pinch or unpinch your fingers across the screen.

7. A company called Infogear, later acquired by Cisco, has applied for and been granted trademark registration for various versions of the name iPhone since 1993. Cisco filed litigation against Apple, but the two sides negotiated an end to the dispute which calls for them to take steps into "exploring interoperability" between the Cisco and Apple iPhone products.

8. The iPhone face will feature only one physical button, the "Home" button, which will whisk users back to the main screen.

9. Interested in buying the iPhone simply for its video, audio and other functionalities and not even signing up for phone service? You can't. A phone contract is required. It's been rumored that a sixth generation iPod will be very similar to the iPhone but with much greater storage capacity, but even the best guesses have it coming out in fourth quarter 2007 at the earliest.

10. Apple's first foray into cell phones was the doomed ROKR phone produced by Motorola and featuring iTunes functionality. The failed experiment had many critics, the biggest of which being Steve Jobs himself. "What we learned was that we wouldn't be satisfied with glomming iTunes onto a regular phone," Jobs told Time magazine. "We realized through that experience that for us to be happy, for us to be proud, we were going to have to do it all."
