Jon Stewart, The Daily Show

1. Jon Stewart's birth name was Jon Liebowitz. He has been quoted as saying his original name "sounded too Hollywood."

2. He played soccer for the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, where his sense of humor inspired his teammates to establish the "Liebo Award" in his honor. The award is bestowed each year on the soccer team's biggest clown.

3. Stewart proposed to his wife in a crossword puzzle he created with Will Shortz, crossword editor at The New York Times. Stewart and his wife reportedly do the Times crossword together every night.

4. Multiple biographies list his nicknames as Lefty, Poochy, Soupy and Susceptible Boy (which he earned from colleagues at The Jon Stewart Show on MTV, due to his frequent colds and infections).

5. His first joke in stand-up comedy is said to be: "What do they call lunch hour in the diamond district when all the Hasidim are causing a traffic jam in the streets? Yidlock."

6. Though not known for his film work, Stewart has appeared in small roles in a number of movies including Death to Smoochy, Half Baked, Big Daddy, Committed, The Faculty, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

7. Stewart reportedly removed all the mirrors from the office he inherited from former Daily Show host Craig Kilborn.

8. On October 15, 2004, Stewart made a contentious appearance on CNN's Crossfire, during which he criticized the program and its hosts for failing to provide educational content on important issues, and instead serving as the pro-wrestling equivalent in political discourse. Just a few months later, Crossfire was cancelled. CNN President Jonathan Klein remarked that Stewart "made a good point about the noise level of these types of shows, which does nothing to illuminate the issues of the day."

9. On the prospect of potentially having to replace George Bush jokes with barbs aimed at a new president like Barack Obama, Stewart told Rolling Stone: "I'd rather make fun of somebody who is wearing their humble beginnings on their sleeve than somebody who has created a situation where casualties are involved. So the idea that somehow it's easier now -- it's not. Because right now it is a comic box lined with sadness."

10. Stewart's contract to helm The Daily Show is up in 2008.
